I called in sick today. I woke up with terrible stomach cramps and rather uhhh loose stools. The cramps were coming in waves and they were just miserable. I called Jon and told him I wasn't coming in to work. I honestly don't remember the last time I told an employer that I wouldn't show up because I was sick. Nearly two years at Test Equipment World Domination Headquarters. A year and a half at Fairview Southdale. 5 Years at FedEx. Prior to that, at Luther's bookstore and at ACR as a Program Counselor, I may have called in, but I don't remember.
What did I do today? I went back to bed. I slept off and on for a while and then threw in the Blockbuster movie that came in the mail yesterday, The Seven Samurai. After watching the movie for a while, I got hungry for rice. That was agreeable with my stomach so I ate some without incident. I hadn't seen Seven Samurai before and I have to admit that on first viewing I didn't understand all the hype about it being the greatest movie ever made. Blockbuster sent the Criterion Collection edition so there is a commentary track with snooty film experts telling me why it was so great. That was pretty cool. I generally watch movies purely for entertainment, so, I miss stuff left and right that snooty film experts know all about. Watching part of the movie again with the commentary track on was enlightening to say the least. Greatest film ever made? I suppose, but I wouldn't be able to tell you. Listen to the snooty film critics.

That Criterion Collection treatment of classic movies rocks. I could easily load up a Netflix list with only those movies.
Still, the best movie of all time--IMHO and that isn't Godfather or Godfather II--hasn't received the CC treatment: Wings of Desire. I highly recommend you put it on your rental list.
It's about angels observing humans and wondering what it feels to be human. One of the angels we follow in the movie falls in love with woman and chooses to "fall" and experience what is to be human. I won't go too much into all the philosophy involved in the discussions and meditations, but the central discussion is about whether it is better to be a pure spirit or a complicated human.
Did I mention this is a German flick, directed by Wim Wenders? (Don't worry there's subtitles.) It's shot in what was once considered West Berlin (the movie came out in 1987), and the cinematography is gorgeous. While it may seem cliche in my description here, the use of black and white for the world the angels see versus the use of color for the world of humans works extremely well. (And don't be fooled by the awful and cheesy Hollywood re-make City of Angels with Nic Cage and Meg Ryan.)
I'd say put Wings of Desire on your list for the next time you take a sick day, but that could be ten years from now. So just put it on your list for the next time.
I'm going to put it on MY list - I take a lot more sick days than The Old Man!
My friend Matthew has told me to see this film. Problem is I can never remember any recommendations when it comes time to add to my list. Thanks, now I've got it in writing.
