The Last Meet And A Halloween Story

Tonight is KyKy's last swim meet. They are calling it JV sections, but what it really is is the JV City Championship. The section that Southwest is in is filled with suburban powerhouses whose JV teams would probably give SW's Varsity a run for their money. Coach would rather have the girls compete with programs of similar ability, and I agree with her on that. Minneapolis schools are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to facilities. Because South and Southwest share the same pool for practices and home meets and the divers practice in the mornings not allowing the swimmers to swim, Minneapolis teams simply can't get the yards in to field competitive teams. It's pretty sad, but that's just how it is sometimes.

TOYH and Madster and 'Nika trekked up to Vadnais Heights to Trick or Treat with their cousins. Lolls live on a circular road that has plenty of houses, so the kids make one circuit and come back with a bit of candy, but not too much. I stayed at home because KyKy was at Varsity City Championships and needed to be picked up. After I got her home, I went over to my neighbor's for our "book club." I looked across the street at the trick or treaters going up to the big house on the corner. It was lit up with Halloween lights. It also has these big cast aluminum storm doors that are meant to look like big scrolled iron gates. They are pretty stout since the idea is to prevent break ins. Anyway the trick or treaters would go up door, knock on it and the owners would come to the door. Rather than opening up the door for them, the owners would shove the candy out to the kids through the mail slot. Only in the 'hood I guess.

Next year Kysa should go out for the cross-country team. They'll never be short on practice facilities, and she'll still get the same great rapport with her teammates!! Plus, some (admittedly not all) of the fall weather can make for fabulous practices and meets. Nothing beats running across a golf course or park on a cool, crisp, sunny fall day.

I think SW might have a cycling club, but I don't know if they do cross. (And if she does cross, she's going to have to clean her own damn bike) I'm not sure about the running thing. When she was is soccer long ago, she said she liked it except for "all the running." She and Madster were in a summer track program last summer. KyKy was only interested in the field events, less running I presume.

YES, I ran in cross-country in high school - my sophomore year. For some strange reason, I went back to swimming the following year, and ended up hating it. In fact, Thanksgiving my junior year stands out in my mind as one of the best ever, just because of the profound relief I had at being finished with the swimming season.

Unlike my swimming experience, I have many fond memories of cross-country (running, that is). I wasn't very good - maybe that's why I didn't stay with it a second year. Our last meet was during the infamous teacher's strike. Someone persuaded somebody to provide the team a bus, and we drove up north to our sectional meet, sans Stormin' Norman, who had to drive separately. He techinically wasn't supposed to go at all because of the strike, but showed up as a "spectator." It was snowing, but not too cold, and although some of the runners didn't like the weather, I loved it. Had my best finish ever.

Seriously, if I knew then (in middle school & high school) what I know now...

If I had to choose between the monotony of swimming back and forth, back and forth, looking at the bottom of the pool, and being able to enjoy the lovely autumn scenery, mapping out new routes for a workout and hanging out on golf courses, I would have tried to like running more.

You guys swam with the wrong crowd. We had fun.

Well, maybe... if you consider swimming nekkid with the gals "fun." I guess you just like a different kind of scenery.

UNRELATED NEWS FLASH: I had a letter published in the Strib on Sunday (Nov. 4). It's not on the opinion pages, however. It was printed in the Part 2 of the East Metro section, which most of you don't get. If you want to read it, go to the Strib website and do a search on Hannah Montana.

The Old Man must still be recovering from the image of nekkid swim practice. That's why we haven't heard from him for awhile...

Hey Old Man, and the rest of you whose names appear on this blogs's ownership: What Up?

You cycling folk might be happy to hear that in my arguments in the built environment course, a couple of students are going with cyclist topics. Several students are arguing urban renovation needs to include bike lanes and paths. One guy's ideas aren't just environmentally concerned, he also sees these lanes as playing a role in community-building. Should be interesting.

I have said it all along and I am half serious, the bike is the answer!

So you're half NOT serious? Which half is not serious - the lower half that has to do all the work pedaling the bike in 40 mph headwinds, or the upper half with a brain that has second thoughts about biking in -20 degree windchill?

Half serious sounds like you're on the fence, Neerdmans! Gotta make a commitment here.

You are right!!! Thank you!!! I am all there, both halves!!
