Everybody but me is back at it this week. KyKy left early today for morning practice before school. The Madster and 'Nika went out to the bus stop at 34th and Columbus we've been going to since 1998. This is the first year since we moved into the house that KyKy isn't climbing on that Emerson bus. She's joined the crowd of kids that have moved on to bigger and better things I guess. In 5 more years there won't be a Stocking at that bus stop anymore.
It'll be interesting to hear what KyKy and Madster's impressions are of their teachers. K is in a whole new school so we don't know any of the teachers, and since all of our friends kids are going to South, we can't get the dish on any of the Southwest bunch. The Madster is getting a whole new batch of teachers who are new to Emerson. They left a good impression on us after we met them at the school open house. We're hoping she has a great year. 'Nika is with some veterans who have been at the school since we started sending the kids there, so she should be fine. This week TOYH starts her final term at St Kates. 3 plus years into this slog and the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel is getting much brighter.
We were able to get stuff done around the house despite all our social engagements. On Sunday, we went to a little get together up in Vadnais Heights for our nephew's birthday. Monday, my sister Terri and her family stopped by with their bikes and a foreign exchange student, so we took a little tour around Lakes Calhoun and Harriet. Lovely day for a ride. In between these things, TOYH finished up the Madster's bedroom. She is now sleeping in a north woods cabin. The Dreadful Man came down, and with the help of The Madster, painted a scene on the one big blank wall of her room. On the one hand, The Madster wanted her room to look like the inside of a cabin. On the other, she wanted wildlife painted on the wall. Her solution? Paint the wall as the inside of cabin where the animals have broken in to eat the food. So there's a black bear and a raccoon munching away at the stores. Pretty clever, I thought. I spent the weekend painting trim on the outside of the house. It was looking pretty raggedy and white trash, so it got a power wash, prime and paint job. This was only the trim on the first floor, mind you. At the upper reaches of the second floor there's some peeling paint that will have to be dealt with eventually. I'm thinking, "Hire somebody." Unless I suddenly get ambitious and rent scaffolding and a truck to transport it, it's just going to have to wait.

Where is everybody?
Gophers win... sort of, I guess?
What's up with the Gophers having trouble with teams from the MAC? They lose to BG, take three OTs to beat Miami, OH... hmmmm... maybe it's not the MAC, maybe it's teams from Ohio that give them trouble.
Wait, now that I think about it: the Gophs aren't the only Minnesota team with Ohio troubles. Look what happened to the Twins when they faced the Indians. That certainly wasn't pretty.
Good thing you have an allegiance to Ohio teams, Francis. The sports franchises in Atlanta haven't been giving you much to cheer about.
Although I'm not sure *why* his allegiance is with the Indians. Just ask him how many World Series his team has brought home in the last 25 years, and compare that to the Twin(kies). Hmmmm...
Tracy, what are you talking about? Georgia Tech football is looking good. They beat up Notre Dame in South Bend. Well, I guess that doesn't mean much this year. (And I have to admit that family ties to ND have meant lifelong rooting for the Fighting Irish. It was tough choosing between family and employer.)
Still, the Ohio allegiance remains, but, as Jen points out, there's not much to cheer about (Indians last title? 1948. Browns last title? 1964, pre-Super Bowl era. Cavs last title? Never.).
Jen, what have the Twins done for you lately? The Indians have at least been to the WS two more times than the Twins in the last 12 years. Granted, they were somewhat to the WS in the 1990s what the Vikes were to the Super Bowl in the 1970s.
Yeah, but the Vikes went to the Super Bowl FOUR times between the late 60's and late 70's, whereas the Indians went to the Series only twice.
And wasn't Tracy referring to sport "franchises"? Would that not imply a for-profit, professional team? Are you saying that GA Tech is a money-making machine that doesn't educate its athlete-students, but rather just puts them out on the field to make hundreds of thousands of dollars for the school?
What exactly goes on in the hallowed halls of Tech that would cause you to juxtapose professional sports teams with College organizations?
Nothing unsavory, academically speaking, is going on. Remember, this is the school that suspended its senior quarterback for his last game of his college career (and probably life) at the Gator Bowl for academic reasons.
Still, point taken, and you know I agree. Anyone who thinks college sports are anything but big business is fooling himself/herself. Athlete-student, instead of student-athlete indeed.
These programs are all money-making machines, except in Division III where the kids play for the love of the game. Go (Emory) Eagles!
Scott, how do you feel about your blog being hijacked for sports talk?
Tour of Spain is on!!
I wonder if Scott himself has been hijacked in some way, it's been so long since he blogged.
Maybe the evil bike posse has him.
Yeah, and Neil is trying to divert us with his "Tour of Spain" talk so we won't think about the Evil Bike Posse!
Tracy, did you mean to use the word "hijack" on this particular date??
I think I was trying to emulate Francis with my word choice.
Another thought on Scott's disappearance: maybe he decided to rent the scaffolding after all, with disastrous results.
I'm back. As for sports hijacking, I don't care. I find football pretty dull. 40 seconds of strategizing to figure out what they'll do for the next 6 seconds. I can watch a game for about 10 minutes and then I'll be thinking about how the garage needs to be cleaned.
Well, the Women's World Cup is going on over in China. (That's soccer, y'all.) Somehow the U.S. seemed lucky to get a 2-2 draw against North Korea. Looks like they're having a hard time adjusting to the post-Mia Hamm era.
